About GENCO
Generations of businesses in need of third-party logistics have deferred to GENCO Distribution System. Founded in 1898, the company, also doing business as GENCO ATC, offers warehousing and distribution services, reverse logistics (processing of returned goods), product liquidation, supply chain analysis, transportation management, including parcels, – more... and damage research (analyzing the cause of customers' damaged products). Customers include manufacturers, retailers, and government agencies. The company manages 130 locations in North America, providing a combined 38 million square feet of warehouse space. CEO Herb Shear owns the company, which was started by his grandfather Hyman Shear.
Strategy
In mid-2010 affiliates of private equity Greenbriar Equity Group bought some $125 million in GENCO shares. Along with borrowings, the proceeds were used to purchase ATC Technology Corporation, a logistic service provider specializing in transmission systems and electronic equipment repair. The acquisition, valued at more than $512 million, merged ATC Technology with GENCO and created an industry supply chain management Goliath. The surviving entity, rebranded GENCO ATC, angles to take the lead in providing third-party logistics services in the consumer electronics/IT marketplace. – less
