Community Engagement Manager (Former Employee) –  Cincinnati, OHNovember 11, 2015
Way too much work for the pay and hard work is not recognized if you do not meet membership goals. Management has a sneaky way of keeping their employment. They often throw their employees under the bus and make them a scapegoat. One director has fired the staff in her department every year for the last four and she still has a job. A lot of favoritism comes into play and ideas are stolen frequently without giving credit to the lower level employees that developed them. Very little training when you first start and almost no support from your manager depending on who they are. Also, management does not like questions. If you are unsure of something, make sure you do as much research as possible before you ask. It will be seen as not being proactive in your review when, in reality, your manager is the one that is incompetent. Like I said, very sneaky.
Pros
Community office hours gets you out of the office so you can actually get some work done.
Cons
Frequent nights and weekends, no overtime, mandatory vacation during holidays, business casual dress code

Wonderful cause and work with girls and volunteers but no life balance
Community Engagement Manager (Former Employee) –  Toledo, OHAugust 25, 2015
In many ways I love working for the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. I like working directly with volunteers and girls to build girls of courage confidence and character. I respect my colleagues, Team Lead and Director even though I don't always appreciate their tactics and methods.
That being said through the restructure of 2013 the way of work is not working and it is completely overloaded in my department. We do not have the business support that we need to make the work load bearable. The work load constantly calls for more and more hours a week and it is not uncommon to work 50 to 60 hours a week. This work load would not be an issue if the compensation were hourly but, it is not. It is salary and it never works in favor of the employee. There is a workaholic expectation which does not value work life balance. There is a high turn over rate and low job satisfaction. The employee review process is geared to diminish the achievements one has made and keep the employee small. The work environment negates the very goals of the organization. While we are to be about building girls of leadership the staff itself is not empowered to be leaders or innovators. A big portion of the job is sales which is never discussed in the interview process and the hours of work are down played a lot.
Overall if executive management listened to regional and employee needs this organization could actually be about there word.
Pros
great cause
Cons
work load

Focus on quantity of membership, not quality.
Membership Specialist (Current Employee) –  Cincinnati, OhioAugust 28, 2012
Hardest part of the job: An unreasonable amount of work is given to specialists, and everything needs to be a priority. Management focuses on the quantity of girls recruited to the organization, rather than the quality of the experience.

Most enjoyable: Flexible schedule and good benefits
Pros
flexible schedule
Cons
long hours, small salary
