Givens Estates is a nonprofit continuing care retirement community located on a 215-acre campus in Asheville, North Carolina. The organization was incorporated in 1975. The first residents moved to Givens in 1979. Currently, there are approximately 800 residents in a variety of living options including residential living, assisted living and health care. In October 2007, the Great Laurels of Junaluska opened in Haywood County. This addition to Givens community includes 100 affordable apartments for residents of limited means.
Givens Estates is affiliated with the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, and has developed relationships with and received support from United Methodist Churches in the Blue Ridge, Smoky Mountain, Appalachian and Catawba Districts of the Conference. Givens is a member of LeadingAge and LeadingAge North Carolina, the United Methodist Association (UMA), and the North Carolina Health Care Facilities Association (NCHCFA). Givens has received accreditation through The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities - The Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CARF-CCAC) and is rated by Fitch Ratings.
Throughout its history, Givens Estates has expanded its services and residential options in order to more fully minister to seniors from all walks of life. Today, the campus includes 86 single-family cottages, 40 duplexes, 82 villas and 192 main building apartments; 78 HUD-assisted apartments; 47 assisted living beds; an 84-bed health care center, with short-term rehab beds and skilled nursing care beds (Medicare/Medicaid certified).
Compassionate care is a vital part of Givens' ministries as demonstrated through its internal charitable care and external community benefit, which exceeds 5% of annual revenues. Givens has a long-standing history of ministry to residents with financial limitations. One (1) out of four (4) of its residents receives financial assistance. This includes residents in the HUD subsidized and tax credit apartments on the Asheville and Waynesville campuses, and Medicaid residents in the health center.
Givens has embarked on ministries which benefit people beyond its resident communities. It is estimated that well over four thousand (4,000) people in the region are impacted annually through outreach efforts and partnerships with congregations and other non-profit organizations. To strengthen the commitment to the region, LifeMinistries Outreach, LLC was established in 1998 to help congregations and communities become more aware of underserved populations and wellness needs within their congregations, schools and communities. LifeMinistries provides guidance in developing and implementing programs that specifically address those needs. – less
