Glazer's Wholesale Drug Company, named during Prohibition when only drugstores and drug wholesalers could deal in liquor, is a wholesale distributor of alcoholic beverages. In Texas it is the largest company of its kind and one of the largest wine and spirits distributors in the US. The company distributes Budweiser beer, Robert Mondavi wines, Brown-Forman and Bacardi spirits, and Diageo products. CEO Bennett Glazer and his family own Glazer's. The company's origins date back to the early 1900s when the Glazer family sold flavored soda water, which it distributed using horse-drawn wagons. Today Glazer has operations in 12 US states.
Growth is Glazer's game. The company has been scooping up companies big and small and in 2011 included the acquisition of Halo Distributing Company, one of the largest US malt beverage suppliers, with distribution of about 6.5 million cases annually and servicing over 3,500 retail stores in and around San Antonio, Texas. Halo distributes beers from MillerCoors, Heineken USA, Diageo Guinness USA, and New Belgium. The purchase of Halo expands Glazer's beer distribution to roughly 28 million cases a year (or around $530 million in sales).
Glazer made other long-term agreements with Diageo and Moёt Hennessy USA to distribute wine and spirits in Texas and Louisiana in 2010. The company also acquired Prestige Wine Cellars, a distributor of wine throughout Texas, which distributes to grocers, restaurants, and hospitality-related businesses. Prestige has a variety of wines from around the world including small to independently owned wineries.
Glazer's also plays with the big boys in the distribution sandbox, forming joint ventures in order to grow its business. It has a strategic joint venture with Southern Wine & Spirits of America called Southern/Glazer's Distributors of America, which covers wine and spirits distribution in 30 US states. It also has a joint venture with Charmer Sunbelt that goes by the name of Alliance Beverage Distributing Company of Arizona, which it entered into in order to get a foothold in The Grand Canyon State.
The company distributes its long list of libations to liquor and convenience stores, grocery retailers, restaurants, hotels, and specialty retailers in
Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Texas. And speaking of big boys, Glazer's counts Wal-Mart as one of its customers. To facilitate its relationship with Wal-Mart, Glazer's has a sales office in Rogers, Arkansas to manage Wal-Mart and Sam's Club national accounts, which covers over 10 states.
Glazers was founded in Dallas in 1909 as the Jumbo Bottling Company by Louis Glazer. – less
