There's nothing lean about this company's PR skills. GolinHarris is a public relations firm, providing a variety of communications, strategy, and marketing services to clients. The company operates from approximately 40 offices worldwide and has served such notable clients as Nintendo, Sprint, Toyota Motor Sales USA, and the William Wrigley Jr. Company. GolinHarris was founded in 1956 by public relations guru Al Golin. The following year, Golin's cold call to then small-fry McDonald's won him an account with the hamburger chain. GolinHarris continues to represent the Golden Arches today. The firm is a subsidiary of advertising conglomerate The Interpublic Group.
GolinHarris has expanded internationally in recent years, boosting its presence in China, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. In 2011 it opened an office in Bucharest, Romania. The company has also opened several specialty practices, focusing on employee communications (Insidedge) and corporate social responsibility (Change). Its GolinHarris Public Affairs combines digital technology with traditional public policy tactics such as lobbying and grassroots marketing.
The company partners with other Interpublic firms in order to expand, taking advantage of its parent company's vast network of agencies to strengthen its resources. In 2011 Interpublic acquired the Brazilian-based S2Publicom for an undisclosed sum. Interpublic is using S2 to bolster its Weber Shandwick and GolinHarris divisions' growth in the region. Previously GolinHarris partnered with Octagon Marketing, another Interpublic unit, to form Octagon PR, a business focused on sports public relations strategy. The unit caters to domestic and international corporate sponsors.
In mid-2012 the company announced it would acquire UK health care communications firm Virgo HEALTH. Virgo, which lists industry heavy weights Astra Zeneca, GSK, and Johnson & Johnson among its clients, will become part of a newly formed digital unit called Go Digital Health.
GolinHarris operates as part of Interpublic's Constituency Management Group (CMG) segment, which is comprised of specialist marketing services offerings. In addition to GolinHarris, Weber Shandwick, and Octagon, other CMG companies include FutureBrand, DeVries, and Jack Morton. Interpublic acquired GolinHarris in 1999. – less
