Flexible job with some benefits
Cashier/Stocker (Current Employee), Allendale, MI – May 23, 2013
A typical day consist of making coffee and stocking stores. my co-workers are easy going and are mainly GVSU students. The hardest part of the job is pulling a cart of food across the bridge in the windy, snowy winters. The most enjoyable part of the job are the free meal plans and the encounters that you have with the customers.

Teaching my peers gave me life-long skills
Teaching Assistant (Current Employee), Kirkhof Center School of Communication Studios – April 15, 2013
Pros: fun environment
Cons: old equipment
I work directly with my advisor and professor, and my students. My students happen to be my peers too. As a teaching assistant, I had a 3-hour commitment every week. I have grown immensely over the past two years of teaching. The hardest part of my job is getting all video content to work properly. I love watching the finished live-to-tape shows that – more... I produced. – less

Tutoring is somewhat flexible. Not sure what GVSU's full-time jobs look like.

I had the greatest boss on the planet
Security Specialist/Ticket Writer (Former Employee), Grand Rapids, MI – October 11, 2012
Pros: great schedule, understanding management
Cons: could only have job as a student
I was a student worker and had a very relaxed work schedule. They recognize that studies come first and really work with all people when scheduling. I really enjoyed my job and was sad to see it end.

I left this organization after almost 12 years due to serious health issues caused by bullying and harassment.
Academic Department Coordinator (Former Employee), Allendale, MI 5 yrs, Grand Rapids, MI 6+ years – August 12, 2012
Pros: pay was ok
Cons: see my review.
Had two job offers in one day. Accepted the one closest to my home. They did not tell me that the job would be moving to a city farther away in 5 years. After the move to the city, a coworker was promoted and I experienced several years of bullying and harassment from this coworker, another coworker (who wanted my job), my boss, and another management – more... person. My health suffered to the point I was rushed to the hospital and spent some time in the cardiac unit. The union filed some grievances on my behalf, but the stress of following through on them would have killed me. I wound up leaving this organization. – less

Great supervisors and colleagues, flexible schedule, and challengeing work.
Research Assistant (Former Employee), Allendale, MI – July 24, 2012
Pros: friendly, respectful, constructive criticism, great experience.
Cons: volunteer basis only.
I met with my colleagues about once a week to discuss our progress, goals, and deadlines. We freely offered our thoughts without fear of criticism, and learned how to improve our work productivity. If anyone fell behind due to personal or academic obligations, the team distributed his or her work to stay on schedule.

I enjoyed experiencing the process – more... of research experimentation: from developing a hypothesis, gathering articles on the subject, constructing an experiment design, testing the thesis, and writing and reporting our results. Sometimes, the experimental procedures felt mundane and repetitive, but I felt proud of our work and enjoyed the overall experience. – less

College Work
Teacher's Assistant (Former Employee), Allendale, MI – July 8, 2012
Pros: work study
Cons: not enough pay
This was okay. Rarely worked because I was in school at the time. Only really received work if it was feasible for the budget.

Flexible, Regular student employment with a focus on the student's needs
Student Employee (Former Employee), Grand Rapids, MI – March 12, 2012
Pros: flexible hours, work in a team, allowed to work on my own
Cons: as a desk worker, none.
Grand Valley State was by far my favorite place to work as a student. As either a Resident Assistant or Desk Worker, there was great emphasis on the needs of the student as well as on culminating skills. The work was regular, as often as possible and worked around my schedule as a work.
