Some Great Danes have an all-American heritage. Great Dane Trailers, a division of Great Dane Limited Partnership, is one of the largest manufacturers of truck trailers in North America. The company makes standard dry freight trailers, refrigerated trailers (reefers), and platform (or flatbed) trailers. Great Dane has division offices in Georgia and Illinois and manufacturing plants in six US states, with new and used trailer sales, aftermarket parts, and service centers across North America and South America. Great Dane is a unit of Chicago-based investment group CC Industries, which is controlled by Henry Crown and Company.
Due to the economic downturn and the need for more efficient manufacturing, Great Dane in 2009 closed its original plant in Savannah, Georgia, transferring reefer production to plants in Indiana and Nebraska. However, just a year later, it announced plans to build a new plant for the manufacture of reefers in Statesboro, Georgia, with plant production expected to begin in 2012.
The company that became Great Dane started in 1900 as a maker of sheet metal blowpipe systems and switched to trailers in 1931. It began rolling reefers in the 1940s. Great Dane Trailers merged with Pines Trailer Company in 1997 to form Great Dane LP, and the company marked its centenary of operations in 2000. Great Dane also sells used trailers. – less
