Money might not grow on trees, but green does grow on this tree. Green Tree Servicing is one of the largest servicers of home loans in the US. From about 30 offices around the US, the company performs outsourced collection services and provides loan refinancing services to borrowers and third-party clients. It specializes in so-called "high-touch" loans including subprime residential mortgages, home equity lines of credit, and consumer installment loans. It also has the nation's largest portfolio of manufactured housing loans. The company's total portfolio weighs in at some $38 billion. Walter Investment Management, a company that owns and services mortgages, acquired Green Tree in 2011.
Walter Investment bought Green Tree from Centerbridge Partners for more than $1 billion. Centerbridge began looking to unload its stake as mortgage servicers found it more difficult to collect on delinquent loans due to the ongoing mortgage and foreclosure crisis. However, Walter Investment is hoping to tap into growing demand from big lenders seeking to outsource its mortgage servicing duties to specialized firms such as Green Tree.
Formed in 2008, Green Tree's capital markets group, known as Green Tree Investment Management, handles the acquisition, securitization, and sale of loan portfolios in the secondary market. The unit also manages a private investment fund with holdings in residential mortgage-related assets.
Through Green Tree Insurance Agency the company also sells health insurance, homeowners insurance, and other consumer property/casualty coverage, such as auto, boat, and motorcycle policies. – less
