About H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, founded in 1986, is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center located on the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida. The institute carries it out its stated mission of contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education. – more... It operates a 200-bed medical and surgical facility, as well as outpatient treatment programs, a blood and marrow transplant program, and The Moffitt Clinic at Tampa General Hospital. Its research programs include study in the areas of molecular oncology, immunology, risk assessment, health outcomes, and experimental therapeutics.
In addition to cancer studies, the Moffit Research Institute conducts drug discovery research, partly through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and other research laboratories. The research institute largely relies on funding grants from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health.
The Moffit Cancer Center likewise has educational and health care alliances with a number of Florida hospitals and colleges. It formed a new alliance with Shands HealthCare and the University of Florida to collaborate on cancer care and research in 2008.
In addition to treatment, the cancer center is also focused on cancer screening and prevention, offering genetic testing for certain kinds of hereditary cancers (breast, ovarian, colon, and melanoma) through its Lifetime Cancer Screening & Prevention Center.
The medical facility completed an expansion project in 2009. The addition included new radiation treatment units and more space for the blood and marrow transplant unit. It also added patient beds and physician office capacity. – less
