The Harlem Children’s Zone has been lauded around the world for its birth-through-college network of programs serving 12,000 children in Central Harlem. HCZ is breaking the cycle of poverty for children and families through education, though a wide range of programs tackle the academic, social-emotional and health needs of its kids. The organization operates two K-12 public charter schools as well as working with thousands of children who live in the Zone and go to traditional public schools. Because of its unprecedented success, HCZ has been the model for President Barack Obama’s Promise Neighborhoods initiative as well as for hundreds of other communities around the world. It has been featured on 60 Minutes, The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as in The New York Times, Time and the Washington Post, among others.
HCZ’s Promise Academy charter schools are unlike any other school. Because we care deeply about our students, we consider the entire child and do whatever it takes to ensure they graduate from college and are ready for a happy, self-sustaining adulthood. Because of the school’s longer day and year, students have the time to both work intensely on core courses, such as English and math, and cover the sciences and the arts. The school works closely with the after-school program, which offers academic assistance as well as opportunities to explore enriching disciplines, from chess to dance to video to electronic music. The school is also concerned with students’ wellness, so we serve freshly cooked healthy meals, make sure they get daily exercise and give them access to our in-school health center. – less
