About Harlem Educational Activities Fund
The Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Inc. was founded in 1989 through the generosity of the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Fund to provide Harlem educators with the private resources and support that can be extremely vital to enhancing school effectiveness and student outcomes.
In the early days, HEAF provided support to select public schools in Central – more... Harlem in recognition that many inner-city schools require expanded educational resources if they are to assist students in overcoming the barriers often chronicled in educationally and economically challenged communities. The Readers Theater at P.S. 76 provided instructional support and materials and helped the school create conditions for improvement. When the program began, only nine percent of the students were performing at or above grade level in reading, 11 percent in math. By the time the program was institutionalized, 48 percent of students were performing at or above grade level in reading, 53 percent in math. A similar spirit of innovation lead to an effective, long term partnership with The Mott Hall School, that resulted in support for students entering the city's specialized high schools and the creation and nurturance of a world class chess team, the Dark Knights, funded and staffed for many years through the auspices of the Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Inc. These successes served as clear evidence that all students can learn provided they receive the right support, guidance and resources.
The commitment to education of our Board of Directors resulted in the creation of programs intended to help young people succeed in high school and college and go on to lead successful and productive lives. HEAF students come to the organization with a strong motivation for learning, but in need of support and guidance in making the right personal and educational choices that can lead to college success. Today, HEAF provides an extended continuum of educational and youth development support to educationally and economically disadvantaged students who understand that environment is not destiny. Students come to HEAF after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer for intensive academic enrichment courses, test preparation and social and personal development activities. Since its inception, HEAF has served nearly 1000 students through its remarkable school partnerships and community based programs. HEAF Scholars have matriculated from the nation's leading institutions of higher education including Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Swarthmore and Haverford. We are continuing to expand our offerings for college-bound HEAF scholars and look forward to many more years of service in the historic Harlem community. – less – More from ZoomInfo »
