Hazen Union School has recently developed new leadership in which all members of the administrative team work for the improvement of the school. An experienced superintendent has provided the autonomy for the new principal to focus on improvement of instruction and assessment. Her understanding of organizational models and her effective leadership have created an atmosphere of trust and support.
The principal's new model for school improvement will give the faculty many opportunities to provide the teacher leadership necessary for the school. The teachers are anxious to participate in the decision-making process of the school and report that they feel a renewed sense of purpose.
At Hazen, a Pyramid of Supports, a system that follows students who are failing to achieve, has been an effective strategy for improvement of student learning. The small size of the school and the dedication of the staff allow health, guidance, and special education to work effectively both within the school and throughout the community. Support staff members work well with the professional staff to provide necessary services for students. Great effort has been made by all members of Hazen Union School to create a school in which all students feel safe and welcomed.
Hazen Union School is located in a community that has provided adequate support for the school, even though its resources are limited. With over 44% of the student population eligible for free and reduced lunch, the community understands the central role that the school must play for the well-being of its children.
