Lots of options, but too much micro management
Test Lead (Former Employee) –  Redmond, WANovember 21, 2016
HCL has many contracts with various companies across the world which can give you a fair number of job opportunities, but with that comes a requirement to do a lot of unnecessary training and other menial tasks that should be taken care of by HCL's HR team.

HCL can improve this, as I feel many of the policies in place are suited or based on work outside of the US tech industry, but there is a fairly large disconnect between the Seattle/Silicon Valley tech culture and HCL.

Where HCL shines outside of various work places is their benefits package. The health insurance options provided are varied and come at a very limited cost compared to other places I have worked for.
Pros
Good benefits, lots of job fields and locations
Cons
Excessive training and micromanagement.

HCL - Metrics Matter
Help Desk Technician (Former Employee) –  Cary, NCMarch 17, 2017
The workplace culture is very centered on metrics and tickets. Your job is to be less concerned with helping your end user and more concerned with answering calls. While the pay wasn't bad and the benefits were good it didn't make up for the fact that the work place environment was less than amicable.
Pros
Good Benefits, Decent Pay, Guaranteed Hours
Cons
Breaks hard to come by, Work/Life Balance hardly exist, Job culture was poor

They didn't know what they were getting
Senior Technical Specialist (Former Employee) –  Naperville, ILJanuary 17, 2017
HCL acquired me, and my job, via an outsourcing agreement. They knew the contract would be short-lived but said they wanted to get the employees to get their experience to be able to branch into telecommunications support. However, they didn't really understand the people and skills they were getting and did a poor job of trying to place us elsewhere. They did bend over backwards to match our previous compensation and benefits.

The people that I work with are fun people, but not everyone is fun.
Systems Analyst/ IT Help Desk Technician (Current Employee) –  Cary, NCOctober 25, 2016
I started here in March of 2015 as a contractor and became a full time employee in September of 2015. I have been here ever since. It's a good starting point for any IT career. You need a base to build upon. There are multiple contracts here and each contract has its own hurdles. Some require more IT work than others and some aren't IT at all. It's a job answering phones all shift. There are 3 shifts making this a 24 hour per day and 7 days per week job.
Pros
Good people, benefits and interesting

Growth Oppurtunity is great with company
Help Desk Manager (Current Employee) –  Cary, NCJanuary 18, 2017
While the growth opportunity is great. There is a lack of work life balance. Working with HCL you have the ability to create your own
career path while HCL ensures the necessary tools are readily available.
Pros
Free Lunches, Flexiable shifts

Good place to work if time-consuming policies that add little value can be avoided.
PMO Executive (Current Employee) –  Redmond, WAFebruary 16, 2017
There are a lot of really good people working on really interesting and innovative projects and doing great things. There are also a tremendous number of bureaucratic blocks in place that can make it hard for even small things to be done to improve the atmosphere at work.
Pros
Great healthcare and retirement benefits

An Indian owned company, mainly dealing with outsourcing Software and IT work to US based Clients..
Senior Technical Lead (Former Employee) –  Webster, NYSeptember 23, 2016
A typical day at work could vary depending upon which Client account you were assigned to. You could be writing code for new features, analyzing and fixing bugs or testing, Daily, you were responsible for logging in your time on a Network application based in India so that clients could be billed.
Co-workers were great to work with, both US and Indian Employees.
Management seemed to treat employees as irresponsible. For example, software that you needed for your company provided computer could only be downloaded from a company web site, even free open source software. Periodically, you had to run a program that examined the software on your computer. If you did not run the program or it found software that you did not get from the company site, you were locked out from the company web site and could not enter your time or access other services. If you did not enter your time, you did not get paid.
Pros
Variety of different work, good benefits, free coffee.
Cons
Working from contract to contract and contracts could be cancelled at any time.

Typical Offshore Company Experience
Specialist EUC (Former Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAJuly 11, 2016
Was part of the remaining IT staff when IT was shifted from the company I had been working for to offshore, so typical day did not change from when was employed by the company. Did not take advance of company resources to learn new skills, maintained job skills using on site resources. Co-workers were fellow remaining IT staff retained during offshore process, who were great to work with. Hardest part of job was communication, both in dealing with cultural differences as well as never being able to actually be in the home office. This was to be expected working for a company based in a foreign country. Most enjoyable part of the job was servicing the on site users who needed assistance.
Pros
Able to work with little interference from management
Cons
Little chance for salary raises, since worked in on site team
