Dead End Job
Instructor (Former Employee), Roseville, CA –
Don't work here. The most valued employees are ALWAYS from the sales and retention team. You will be miserable if you are an instructor. Education is not valued. This is a diploma mill for money. Don't be fooled.

Inappropriate management techniques and work environment
Senior Admissions Advisor (Former Employee), Stockton, CA –
My experience, and the general feeling of Heald Admissions emloyees in Stockton, CA is that it is a place where the employees in th admissions department are treat poorly by their management. The Admissions Directors constantly insult the Admissions Advisors, threaten their job security, and use "bully tactics" to modivate and intimidate their employees. – more...  And I myself was harrassed daily by the management then terminated illegally while on medical leave. I would not recommend any one to work for Heald College or attend their as a student for similar reasons. – less

Left feeling let down..
FWS IT Technician (Former Employee), Portland Oregon –
Pros: loved helping the students and faculty members....
Cons: was only part time.
I worked at Heald College as a Federal Work Study in the I.T. Department. I loved my job, i worked there for a year. I was kicked out of Heald after i took some advise from an adviser about a class i was failing and it got me kicked out. They did however allow me to stay on an additional week to finish out the pay period.

Intertaining and Fun to work
Information Technology Mentor (Former Employee), Fresno, CA –
Pros: meeting new people
Cons: cannot think of any.
My experience working at Heald College while I was attending school there was great. The LLRC manager and LLRC staff made it a very interesting place to work. They always worked around my class schedule and I was always learning something new every day. The students made the job worth while.
A typical day at work was as follows: I came in and started – more...  planning for my meetings that we had 3 of each quarter. I would then contact my first quarter students and basically get a progress report from them to see how things were going, how their classes were holding up, how they were doing with any homework that they may need help with, and guide them to places they needed to go but were not sure the route to take.
Management was great. They kept ontop of things when it came to problems that arrouse while I was there. My co-workers were amazing. If there was something that I may have forgotten I would send my teammate an email and ask his/her if they could fininsh that project.
The hardest part of my job was actually leaving the LLRC Mentor team. I enjoyed working with everyone in the LLRC and the students that I helped out along the way.
The most enjoyable part of my job was getting feedback from the students saying that if it was not for me, they would have dropped out because of whatever problem they had going on at home. – less

As a senior executive here, I received no training, no support and a lived in a culture of blame. Corporate management have no skills in creating a culture of success and creating ridiculous profit is all that is desired.

Heald College is a great place to start your teaching career or if you are retired a great place supplement your income. However within the past 18 months they have gone through three Program Directors in the Paralegal and Criminal Juctice Studies.

Also there is a high turnover ratio for insturctors and so that students are the ones that consequently – more...  suffering. – less

A bitter experience
Instructor and Learning Resource Manager (Former Employee), Fresno, CA –
Pros: top notch training at the corporate level
Cons: popularity contest makes it a "diploma mill".
Heald College does many things right, and some things "first class". Opportunities for professional growth and development are readily available. I would recommend working there part-time. If you have a full-time job, teaching a class on weekends or at night would be a great experience.

I worked there full-time as an Instructor and Learning Resource – more...  manager for 6 years. To make a living wage, (45 K to 62 K at the peak), was a 24/7 proposition. If I wasn't teaching or preparing to teach class, I was grading projects, homework, exams, etc. I opened the Library at 7:00 AM and went home at night after class ended at 10:45 PM Mon thru Thu. On Fridays I went home at 5:00 PM, but spent the evening prepping for a Saturday morning class, ( 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM). On Sunday I did my laundry and prepped for Monday. I put everything I had into the job, (and was really effective), but in the end I got kicked to the curb.

Heald has two glaring weaknesses. The first one could be easily addressed. At Heald your fellow instructors are competitors. Why is that bad? Because it leads to a lot of backstabbing and destructive interaction between and amongst faculty members. There's no trust and limited support and cooperation. Positive competition is good, but negative competition leads to "thug rule." Even very competitive games need some rules or chaos reigns. It's not that they should be unable to replace an under-performing instructor, just not with another instructor who could and should help them improve. After all, why would Chrysler help GM?

The other weakness is a more complex and systemic problem, that frankly, I don't know how to resolve. It affects all of American higher education, but I think it is more extreme at Heald. Though Heald is a "non-profit" corporation, it is run like a business. Unfortunately, in education, (and in many other areas), we should not "let the market decide" everything. Efforts to attract and retain students must be balanced against academic and ethical standards.

If we "let the market decide", the average Heald student would prefer being mailed their degree, along with directions on where to report for their exciting and rewarding career, without having to suffer the inconveniences of paying any tuition or attending class. Focusing too much on the bottom line is a short-term strategy. Good education is a long-term endeavor. – less
