Director of Aquatics

Reports to: General Manager

Full Time - Exempt

Responsibilities

Staffing and Training:

  • Recruit, hire, train and evaluate all Aquatics staff, including instructors, coaches and lifeguards
  • Provide on-deck leadership during all hours of lessons; enlist qualified back-up coverage for emergency shifts and absences of Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Monitor instructor/employee performance; provide feedback on a regular basis, including annual formal performance evaluations
  • Develop/maintain training manual; provide thorough, hands-on training for all new staff
  • Familiarize staff with all responsibilities of the Aquatics department and the larger mission of HealthQuest as a whole

Operational Requirements

  • Develop, organize, and lead the Swim lesson program and all other Aquatics programs
  • Design pool schedule to accommodate lessons, Aquatics programming, water fitness classes, swim access, lap swim access and Swim Team practice requirements in the most efficient manner possible
  • Submit Web updates for department working directly with marketing department
  • Collaborate with Marketing Administrator to design all printed materials (i.e. brochures, flyers, posters) related to department promotion; update supply of promotional materials throughout the club
  • Order all Aquatics equipment, including, but not limited to: lane ropes, chemicals, equipment and supplies
  • Process payroll; ensure hours are reported accurately and deliver to Human Resources in a timely fashion
  • Review any MOD reports from previous day; follow up on member concerns and feedback
  • Complete all administrative paperwork, including invoices, PO, A/P, P&L statements for all programs, substitutions/requested time off forms
  • Complete all personnel paperwork as needed and forward to Human Resources
  • Assist in locker room management during peak pool usage times
  • Develop and implement annual action plan and budget for Aquatics; set goals with staff
  • Research growth, development trends in the industry and integrate into culture

Communication

  • Meet with General Manager monthly
  • Maintain verbal communication daily through 9:10 meetings
  • Respond to member comment forms and phone calls with 24 hours of receiving them
  • Maintain communication weekly with staff folders.
  • Hold regular meetings for Aquatics staff as needed; plan team-building events
  • Update Aquatics staff availability forms and phone lists regularly
  • Communicate regularly with other Managers to ensure optimal operations and cross-promotion
  • Attend and participate in weekly Management Team meetings
  • Coordinate and communicate pool schedule and availability with all parties involved (Swim Team, Physiotherapy - hydrotherapy, Kids’ Club – birthday parties, Tennis – Smash n’ Splash, Member Services, Marketing, etc.)

General

  • Ensure customer service and morale are at their highest level

  • Be visible and involved in the membership community
  • Stay abreast of current industry trends; research competitors regularly
  • Honor and support all other departmental procedures
  • Maintain current knowledge of all activities, programs and events happening in the club
  • Participate in club-wide events whenever possible
  • Perform special projects and duties as requested
  • May require early morning, evening and weekend hours
  • Demonstrate a healthy lifestyle through maintaining and/or improving a commitment to good health and a priority and integrity for physical fitness. (i.e., non-smoker, exercise regularly, etc.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality for all work shifts assigned is essential for successful job performance
  • Attend semi-annual, mandatory All-Staff Meetings and attend one-time New Team Member Service Orientation

Skills/Certifications

  • ASCA Level 2 Swim Lesson Instructor Training (requirement of Swim America to be considered Program Coordinator/Site Supervisor)
  • Certified Pool Operator’s License
  • Annual CPR and AED certification required
  • First Aid certification preferred
  • Effective presentation, teaching, communication and customer service skills
  • Effective marketing and organizational skills
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle, have current auto insurance coverage and an acceptable DMV record or access to reliable transportation

Physical Requirements

  • Extended periods of standing on one’s feet
  • Ability to conduct swim lessons/perform water rescue

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in health and recreation, physical education, or related field
  • One to two years experience in Aquatics management preferred
  • Will accept a combination of education and experience that clearly demonstrates an ability to perform the required tasks
