Owned by some of the most prestigious hospitals in the region, Healthfirst might just have a leg-up on other health care management organizations. The not-for-profit has about 500,000 members throughout New York City, Long Island, and northern New Jersey. It offers government-sponsored – more... health insurance programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, Family Health Plus, and Child Health Plus plans, to low-income and special needs clients. It also offers commercial HMO and point-of-service plans to individuals and small employer groups. Healthfirst was formed in 1993; its plans are administered by HF Management Services.
Healthfirst is a top Medicaid managed care provider in New York State. The company's 40 owner-members include Beth Israel Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and New York City Health and Hospitals.
In addition to its federal, state, and commercial medical plans, Healthfirst offers dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage. Its commercial plans are marketed under the Healthy NY moniker. Healthy NY allows its enrollees to streamline their benefits packages to only encompass the services they need.
Healthfirst expanded its senior services in 2010 when it acquired Senior Health Partners (SHP), a 2,200-member managed long term care plan. SHP manages the care of elderly patients with chronic conditions, who otherwise might be eligible for nursing home placement.
Along with the rare acquisition, Healthfirst increases its presence throughout the area by opening regional offices. In 2010 the company added two community offices (for a total of five) in the Bronx and Brooklyn. – less
