Helping Friends LLC

Friends Helping Friends was incorporated as "Rochester Food Not Bombs" in 1999 after starting to distribute cooked meals in public parks in 1998. Friends Helping Friends (fka Rochester Food Not Bombs) began as a labor of love (and still is, really) of a bunch of kids begging for leftover veggies and fruits at the public market and then cooking – more... a banquet for homeless people in public parks. We raised money by putting on rock concerts while cooking out of St. Joe's on 402 South Avenue.

In early 2003, Friends Helping Friends then began a small trucking company feeding all of the Lyell-Otis neighborhood and the Bay St. neighborhood through our leased warehouse facility at 367 Lyell Avenue and St. Francis Xavier Church at 316 Bay St. Then we decided to clarify our mission through changing our name in early 2004. FHF members have our personal beliefs on militarism, but we are not anti-war activists, but missionaries and service providers dedicated to providing services to the poor in the inner-city.

In 2004, FHF also recieved the donation of a residential property at 30 Mark Street which we completely rehabilitated. In late 2005, we couldn't work out a purchase deal with the owner of 367 Lyell Avenue with one of the crookedest and nastiest landlords in the City of Rochester and were forced to shut down our program until we moved into our new facility at 333 Child Street (705-709 Jay St). Right before we moved out of our old food distribution facility, we bought 226-230 Hudson Avenue to coordinate a free bike shop.

In 2005, Friends Helping Friends was awarded a Compassion Capital Fund grant (faith-based initiative) for excellent grassroots organizations. In July 2006, we moved into our new facility at 333 Child Street (the purchase of the foreclosure property took forever). Since then, it's been upwards and onwards further developing our programs and reaching for the sky! – lessMore from ZoomInfo »
