When I first made the decision to venture into the recruiting business my CEO friends told me I was crazy. "What the hell are you doing in recruiting Kurt, that's such a shady business?"
And they were right. Recruiting-with its contingent searches and revolving-door mercenaries-is a little shady, and very inefficient. But that's exactly what the entrepreneur in me finds so intriguing.
I'm a big believer that high-growth companies need two things, above all else, to grow and prosper...Capital and Talent. But if Talent is so vital to growth, why is it served by a recruiting industry that most CEOs agree is broken? It seems like everyone has a story about a bad experience with a recruiter. It's an industry that is ripe for a revolution.
In 2002 I founded The Controller Group (TCG), a Texas-based accounting consulting firm. We grew TCG from zero to $20M in revenue before merging with Tatum, a national mid-market CFO consultancy, in 2006. From there, we more than doubled our in size, becoming the most profitable division in the organization. As we looked for our own solutions to the "people problem" we struggled between contingent searches that clogged our desk with mismatched resumes and an overloaded internal HR team, who just didn't know how to view hiring strategically. We needed to recruit the top talent that wasn't looking, we needed to know they were the right fit before bringing them onboard and we needed to do all this without breaking our budgets. We also learned that the loyal employee who did a great job when we were a $5M company was in over his head when we were at $30 or $40 million.
Through that journey and after advising hundreds of similar companies, we learned what all successful entrepreneurs know...you can't succeed without great people on your team.
