About Hospice & Palliative Care Of Cape Cod
Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod was founded as the first hospice provider on Cape Cod in 1981 by a group of visionary local citizens facilitated by Mary McCarthy, a nurse at Falmouth Hospital. Focusing on our rapidly aging population, they recognized that there was a need in our community to include the innovative comfort and care model for – more... end of life pioneered by Dame Cicely Saunders in the U.K.
Twenty patients were served in that first year. Seven years later, we were recognized as one of the two largest programs in the state. Now, 25 years after our founding, there are more than 50 hospice organizations statewide, with 8 on Cape Cod alone. We remain the only freestanding non-profit hospice in the area, and the only one with a hospice residence and specialized grief support and palliative care services for children. End-of-life care is our specialty focus, our passion and our expertise. We serve over 800 patients and families a year, primarily in their own homes, with a total of more than 11,000 served over our entire history. We are Medicare certified as well as certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO).
Today we are based out of a beautiful large headquarters in Hyannis, with satellite offices in Falmouth and Wellfleet, and our Mary McCarthy Hospice House in Sandwich. Our more than 100 professionally trained staff and 200 active volunteers serve patients and families across the Cape. We are proud to say that we are the premier hospice provider for Cape Codders experiencing serious illness and loss.
