Riverside Partners (also known as the Riverside Company) is a private equity firm that invests in small and middle-market companies generally valued at less than $150 million. The firm's holdings include more than 80 companies in a variety of industries from autos and health care to media and apparel. Riverside typically closes around 25 to 30 transactions per year, mainly add-ons to its existing portfolio. Founded in 1988, Riverside has completed approximately 210 deals and has more than $3 billion under management in four funds. Investors include banks, endowments, insurance companies, and pension funds. Riverside has nearly 20 offices in the US, the Asia/Pacific region, and Europe.
Riverside, which is co-headquartered in Cleveland and New York, has a portfolio that represents a variety of industries. Some of its investments include GreenLine Foods, and It's Just Lunch matchmaking service.
Although Riverside's portfolio represents diverse industries, the company has tried to avoid cyclical markets such as retail and new technology. Instead, Riverside has developed a special interest in health care investments. In 2008 Riverside launched its health care specialization, resulting in boosted deal flow. Health care represents about 25% of Riverside's portfolio and the company has completed about 40 deals within the industry. The health care industry is an ideal investment for Riverside since it is a growing industry and virtually recession proof.
Other recent acquisitions have run the gamut, including makers of orthopedic medical devices, a car wash detergent maker, an education services provider, and a parking lot operator in Japan. The company continued to build its diverse portfolio in 2010, completing deals for the first time in Italy and Spain. That year Riverside also opened an office in Australia as part of its Riverside Asia Fund.
Each of Riverside's four active funds follow different investment criteria. The Riverside Capital Appreciation Fund typically invests in North American-based platform companies with earnings between $5 million and $20 million. The Riverside Europe Fund targets European companies. Riverside Micro-Cap Fund seeks to invest in smaller, fast-growing companies in North America with earnings up to $5 million. Investments in Japan, China, South Korea, and Australia are handled through the company's Riverside Asia Fund. – less
