About Howard County Public School System
The Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP) of The Howard County Public School System was established in 1986. Over the years, BSAP has been a viable resource to the school system, to black students, to their parents, and to the community. Through a coordinated system of services, BSAP guides black students to develop education, career and personal/social – more... competencies.
The ultimate outcome is for black students to be prepared to excel as leaders ready to conquer the challenges of the 21st century.
BSAP assists the HCPSS with implementing the Comprehensive Plan and achieving the goal of closing the achievement gap evident in state and data patterns.
Academic Transition Assistants and Academic Mentors are academic case managers who provide skilled support and information to students on their formal and informal caseloads. Academic Transition Assistants and Academic Mentors work closely with school administrators, counselors, teachers, and other student support specialists.
BSAP staff encourage students and parents to strive for:
Report card grades above "C" in Math, English, Science, Social Studies
Enrollment in college prep courses
Enrollment in G/T and AP classes
Passing scores on each HSA test
Zero disciplinary referrals
Involvement in at least one club or athletic team
Positive asset development
To meet the HCPSS targets to close the achievement gap by 2007 as delineated in the Comprehensive Plan, BSAP has identified seven areas of impact:
1. Academic Placement
2. Grades and Recognition
3. Nurturing Classrooms
4. Leadership and Participation
5. Academic Support
6. Academic Presence
7. Culture and History
BSAP strategies are enhanced by the Maryland State Department of Education Core Learning Goals for the Skills for Success:
1. Learning Skills
2. Thinking Skills
3. Communication Skills
4. Technology Skills
5. Interpersonal Skills
