A typical day, would involve assisting the assigned individuals work through their developmental goals and objectives, taking them to appointments, escorting them on outings in the community and preparing meals.
I learned that individuals with developmental, physical or mental challenges can have as normal a life as is possible within the realm of their disorders as long as someone cares enough to help them. However, I also learned that those in management and others who make decisions need to listen more to the workers on the front lines. I also learned that while the workers are caring for and protecting the individuals, who is protecting them.
The company's goals and objectives are great, however, management guidelines do not adequately protect their employees from violent individuals.
There was good communications between the the majority of the staff who were dedicated to the job and not just in it for the money.
The hardest part was not being given the tools to adequately protect yourself from the violent outbursts of the individual
The best part of the job was being in a position to help the individuals to grow and expand their horizons.
