In the midst of policy change-over. Erratic communication regarding policy changes
Registered Respiratory Therapist (Current Employee), Alexandria, VA – May 22, 2013
Inova Alexandria is changing from a small general hospital to part of a larger multiple hospital system. Past guidelines are changing and there is not always good communication between and within departments when changes are implimented

Good People
Pharmacy Technician II (Former Employee), Falls Church – May 9, 2013
Pros: good colleagues to learn with & from
Cons: promises for advancement but none recieved
Start of shift I'd start off working on clearing what we had in cue for missing doses for patients and assist the previous shift in cleaning up before they leave. I've learned more about the hospital setting, how things operate & the demands. I really didn't get a chance to learn much about drawing iv's but I asked co-workers to help and learned equations – more... from them. Management wasn't the best, they didn't help with advancing my skills to the next level. They promised they'd give you experience to learn more in other areas but never owned up to those promises.

Hardest part of our job was having holes in schedules and the management not filling the holes or assisting. But the most enjoyable part of the job is actually helping the nurses & co-workers. The good co-workers are always a plus. – less

Enlightening and informative
Pharmacy Technician (Former Employee), Falls Church, VA – May 3, 2013
Pros: good pay
Cons: feeling replaceable
I've learned a lot working at INOVA. INOVA was the most diverse company that I have worked for so I learned to be more open and understanding toward different cultures. The hardest part of the job was all the different personalities because my way of doing something may be total opposite of someone else and you had to figure out a solution to get the – more... job done. Management for the most part were nice, but some could use a few more managerial classes. I enjoyed working at INOVA Fairfax because I am a people person and that job gave me a chance to step out and meet more people in other departments. – less

I really enjoyed my affiliation with INOVA. If the commute wasn't terrible. I would probably apply there to work. I think that it is a great hospital

Registered Nurse (Current Employee), Alexandria, VA – April 20, 2013
Pros: a very good field to get nursing expirence
Cons: management needs to be more supportive of the staff
Very busy day from the beginning of the shift to the end.Co-workers are very supportive and helpful of each. Management is not very helpful when it comes to assisting with patient care. For the nurses to be supportive of each other makes the work day go by fast and easy.

A very well run healthcare organization in the DC metro. The people are great to work with. Lots of politics like any large organization has. Get rid of Singleton.

CEO's got their million bonus while employees raises dependent on whether Inova reaches their financial goals
Radiology;over 20 yrs w/ Inova (Former Employee), Fairfax Hospital; Falls Church Va. – March 1, 2013
Pros: abiliity to transfer to many other facilities in the area
Cons: non existent lunch breaks, not enough staff
Management on all levels does not support their employees; environment of blame, failure to listen to employees concerns about low staffing levels, transport system often takes over an hour to pick up/deliver pts for tests. Pts have extended stays due to inability to get diagnostic tests done, sometimes critical care pts do not get their first MRI's for – more... 24-48 hours; high turnover in staff; administration does not fill positions when people fired/resign; no help moving critical pts from exam tables to gurneys;managers have fired employees by lying /misrepresenting employees actions because they have personality conflicts I personally know of 3 employees who were fired bacause a current manager lied about the employee;safety issues constantly a problem due to short staffing;mandatory employee satisfaction polls annually, but tell employees not to put anything derogatory on surveys; questions regarding administration concerns are directed at your immediate supervisor, when the real problems originate with the highest management; cutting costs paramount; pt care lacking; administration clueless as to what real needs of dept are;no longer have town hall meetings with employees about their concerns as they became angry sessions highlighting employees complaints about no raises, low staffing/no aids on floors or radiology depts, being asked to do the work of 2 people, no raises, no breaks...no help buttons in MRI rooms for pt emergencies; no help button planned for new magnet now under construction.?? Unable to take vacations from 9/1/12 thru Jan 2013 due to EPIC training-didnt want you to miss your training sessions.(I had 4 hours total training-this couldnt be scheduled around holiday vacations???) They just didnt care if their employees spent their holidays alone/away from loved ones. Do they think a couple days of free ice cream makes up for the total disregard for their employees welfare. The CEO sends out these long letters about his family is so important to him and that we need to all be an "INOVA family" but they freeze salary scales, strip departments down to bare bones, no unit secretaries on many units to answer phones etc. They "fix" the transport problem by reducing the amt of transporters, increasing the # of "managers" in transport and wonder why transport times are still over 1 hour; yet it's the radiology dept's fault for not getting pts done quickly and it goes down as being unproductive time, hence we don't need more staff;clueless! Staff is among the best, try to do their job despite the conditions, much opportunity to learn as we get such a wide range of trauma as well as medical cases; excellent radiologists/medical staff although too much responsibility for care placed on "hospitalists" who direct a pt's care yet no nothing about the patients; they tend to order every test in the book whether necessary or not to CYA. – less

Registered Nurse for 8 years expereince
Registered Nurse (Former Employee), Alexandria, VA – February 11, 2013
A typical day at work is knowing that it will be a unique day with challenges. Starting the day off bright and early puntual to work. I see the schedule and team up with my co-workers that I will be working with. I organize my day by prioritizing to see firt and introduce myself. I manage my time accordingly with the doctor I will be working with. I – more... delegate task as needed, coordinate my day by reviewing charts/labs and assessing my patients and eventually will use my critical thinking for each patient situation. The hardest part of my job is time management it would be so much easier to clone myself but I know it is ongoing learning environment. Most enjoyable part of my job is learning and applying my expertise to something each day to help my patient in need.I know by the end of the day I did my best as much as I can to have an excellent patient outcome specific to each patient. – less
