A hospice director is a Registered Nurse, licensed to practice in the state of Texas. She/He provides leadership and direction for the staff achievements of an organization. The director works closely with senior management and ownership. A hospice director essentially oversees the function of the entire hospice operation by implementing policies and directives as well as directing the daily operations of the hospice center.

Job Duties and Description:

  • Job duties include overseeing clinical programs. The director is responsible for directing and supervising that the clinical programs comply with state laws and regulations, as well as ensuring quality of care. A director is responsible for public relations and community education. She/he must establish relationships with community businesses, groups and agencies and represent the hospice organization’s mission. She/he is responsible for overseeing the hiring, training, evaluation and possible termination of staff members. She/he also must ensure the implementation of proper human resource practices.

Skills Desired:

  • Skills desired in a hospice executive director include above-average interpersonal skills and leadership skills. A director must be fluent in public speaking and have good verbal and written communication skills. She/he has the ability to set priorities and make independent decisions, and She/he needs good organizational skills. He must also have skills in educating staff members effectively and be able to market his program to the public. This position requires flexibility in work hours and may include weekend and evening work shifts.

Education and Training:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent ADN with at least 5 years of management experience in Hospice. A candidate is typically required to prove three years or longer of successful management experience and have previous experience in community fundraising, fiscal management and staff development.
