About Interstate Bakeries Corporation

Interstate Battery System of America provides the power for everything from cell phones and laptops to boats, lawn mowers, motorcycles, and RVs. Serving both the retail and commercial markets, the company also offers replacement automobile batteries -- supplied by Johnson Controls -- for such brands as Ford, Subaru, and Toyota. Interstate Battery's – more... 16,000 products are sold online and through more than 200,000 retail locations, including about 300 Interstate All Battery Centers in the US, Canada, Australia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. Its PowerCare unit provides motive and critical power products. Founded in 1952, the company is owned by chairman Norm Miller.

Operations

The company operates its business through four separate entities: Interstate Battery System of America, Interstate All Battery Center, PowerCare and Service Solutions, and Interstate Batteries Recycling.

Strategy

Interstate Battery has focused on growing its chain of Interstate All Battery Center franchises during the economic downturn. The company expanded its retail network significantly and has lured franchises in recent years as a relatively stable route to self-employment. Retail sales of batteries have been trending upward. And to its benefit, Interstate Batteries sells more than 17 million lead-acid batteries every year. It's also banking on the growing rechargeable battery market. Global sales in the rechargeable niche are anticipated to top $50 billion by 2013 (from $36 billion in 2008); in the US, demand is projected to boost rechargeable battery sales by nearly $10 billion during this time. The company has been a proponent of environmental stewardship for decades. Interstate Battery has recycled batteries since its founding in 1952, and these days it recycles some 25 million spent batteries each year, making it the top battery recycler. – less
