The land where the tall corn grows is also the land of Iowa Health System (IHS). The integrated health care system operates some 15 acute care hospitals that serve large communities throughout Iowa, as well as parts of western Illinois and eastern Nebraska. IHS also supports about a dozen rural hospitals, and it manages more than 200 physician clinics located in rural and suburban areas. The system's hospitals provide general medical-surgical care, as well as care in a number of medical specialties such as cardiovascular disease and home health services. Founded in 1993, HIS has about 3,100 licensed beds, some 630 physicians, and 235 mid-level medical professionals.
IHS expands its network through affiliations. In late 2012 it brought Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City into its network, just as it had done the previous year with Methodist Health Services, operator of the 330-bed Methodist Medical Center of Illinois, located in Peoria. IHS also committed $175 million to help Methodist-Illinois enhance its technologies and its service offerings. The health system operates many of its member hospitals through similar affiliation agreements; IHS provides administration, contracting, billing, legal, recruitment, information technology, and other central services. – less
