IVIS - The International Veterinary Information Service (IVIS) was established in 1998 as a not-for-profit organization in Ithaca NY. The founding members are Patrick W. Concannon (Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA), Donald Lein (Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA), Jaime Modiano (AMC Cancer Research Center, Denver, CO, USA) and Peter Daels (National – more... Institute for Agronomical Research (INRA), Nouzilly, France). The primary purpose of IVIS is to provide a vehicle through which up-to-date, clinically relevant and original information can be distributed electronically worldwide to veterinary clinicians, students and other veterinary professionals using Internet technology.
The IVIS Goals and Editorial Board - The IVIS goals include bringing together original publications organized in textbook format and satisfying the same quality criteria as those adhered to by the major veterinary paper book publishers. In order to achieve these goals, IVIS consists of an organizational structure that includes (1) a 10-member editorial/advisory board formed by leaders in the veterinary profession that advise on the choice of editors and consulting editors, (2) editors who write/edit original monographs or multi-author, multi-chapter-type (electronic) textbooks for which they have full discretion in the choice of content and authors, assume responsibility for quality and take credit for their creative effort, (3) consulting editors who assist the editor(s) in their endeavor and provide testimony (editorial comment) to the quality of the manuscript, and (4) contributing authors who are invited by the editor(s) to provide original material for publication on the IVIS website. The following persons serve in the IVIS Editorial Board: Leland (Skip) Carmichael (Emeritus Professor, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA), Brian Farrow (Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences, University of Sydney, Australia), Harold Hintz (Professor, Cornell University, Ithaca NY, USA), Warwick Bayly (Dean, Washington State University, Pullman, WA, USA), John Kastelic (Agriculture Canada Research Station, Lethbridge, Canada), Peter Timoney (The Gluck Center for Equine Research, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY, USA), Victor Shille (Prof. Emeritus, University of Florida and Editor of Theriogenology: International Journal of Animal Reproduction); Luis A. Zarco (Professor and Dean, Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico City, Mexico) and Maja M. Suter (Professor and Director of the Institute for Animal Pathology, University of Bern, Switzerland).
The IVIS Publication Types - IVIS makes several publications available through its website. These include IVIS Books, full-featured veterinary books, manuals and collections of state-of-the art reviews within specific areas of veterinary medicine, and Proceedings of meetings and symposia. The IVIS e-books are the electronic equivalent of classic veterinary textbooks. IVIS welcomes veterinary societies and associations to use the IVIS website to make their Proceedings of annual meetings and special symposia available in electronic format and include these in its searchable database. Lecture Notes and Manuals are texts made available for past or future veterinary courses and continuing education short-courses.
Editors of Books - The editors of books are invited to write/edit a collection of review-type articles in a specific area of veterinary medicine. The editor(s) is invited to define the area of interest and choose a title for his/her publication. The suggested format for Recent Advances Series is a collection of 8 - 15 original reviews on the state of the art; each a minimum of 3 textbook pages long not including references and figures. Manuscripts describe the current state-of-the-art assuming that the reader has a basic knowledge of the topic or has access to other information resources for background information.
Editors Privileges and Responsibilities - The editor(s) retains full discretion in the choice of content, authors and format and is encouraged to adopt the format that best suits the topic of his/her publication. The editor(s) should provide a preliminary list with titles and author names to IVIS. Invitations with detailed information on preferred format for submission, deadline and copyright is sent by IVIS to the contributing authors. Technical assistance on manuscript preparation is also provided by IVIS. The editor is responsible for the quality of content and presentation of his/her book and must make a reasonable effort to respect deadlines. Each e-book is a unique publication that is identified by a book title, editor(s), publisher (IVIS) and table of contents.
Contributing Authors - Authors are selected and invited by the editor(s). The content and format of a contribution is guided by the editor(s). Authors are encouraged to periodically review their contributions and update these whenever deemed appropriate. Proposed updates must first be submitted to the editor of the e-book. After reviewing the proposed modifications, the editor shall forward the new text to IVIS. The author(s) of a manuscript is credited using traditional methods of reference. Each manuscript is identified by its title, author(s), publication date (the equivalent to volume and page number), book title, editor and publisher. Upon request, authors and editors have access to information on numbers and demographics of readers.
