Named after famed naturalist and champion of wilderness preservation, John Muir, John Muir Health provides health care throughout the scenic San Francisco Bay area. The not-for-profit system operates three hospitals, 20 outpatient and urgent care centers, a physician practice organization, and several community health foundations. The John Muir Medical Center Walnut Creek Campus has about 570 beds and specializes in neurological and obstetrics care. The Concord Campus has about 315 beds and specializes in cardiac and cancer care. The John Muir Behavioral Health Center is a 70-bed psychiatric hospital. John Muir Health also offers home health, rehabilitation, and wellness programs.
John Muir Health's network of outpatient facilities include physical therapy and occupational therapy centers, as well as specialty pediatric, womens' health, and diabetes centers. The system also includes medical imaging centers and the MuirLab division, which performs a full range of clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory testing at more than a dozen locations.
To better serve residents of the growing San Francisco Bay area, John Muir Health opened a new patient tower at its Walnut Creek Campus in 2011. The newly constructed addition increased the hospital's bed count and added a number of private rooms, as well as upgraded intensive care, trauma, emergency, and surgery facilities. A smaller expansion at the Concord Campus was completed in late 2010, adding about 120 private patient rooms and a new emergency department.
The projects, which cost a combined $800 million to complete, also included upgrades to the system's IT infrastructure to improve communications and quality of care. Other initiatives that aim to improve patient care -- and ultimately to lower the overall cost of care and meet federal reform guidelines -- include upgrading medical equipment, coordinating regional care, and attracting and retaining skilled physicians. To improve area pediatric services, John Muir Health partnered with Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford in 2011.
John Muir Health was formed from the 1997 merger of the John Muir Medical Center (the Walnut Creek Campus, which dates back to 1965) and the Mt. Diablo Medical Center (now the Concord Campus, dating back to 1930 as the Concord Hospital). – less
