John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods develops land and builds cluster homes, townhomes, and upscale single-family houses in the southeastern US. Target markets include Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Nashville, and Raleigh, with home prices ranging from around $200,000 to more than $1 million. The company also operates New Home Design Studios that provide customizable interior and exterior design services. WFS Mortgage, a joint venture with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, offers lending to John Wieland Homes' customers and others. John Wieland also has a commercial division, which develops office, retail, and mixed-use properties. Chairman John Wieland owns his namesake firm, which he founded in 1970.
In addition to its home building and financing activities, the group provides building, architectural, and related services. Neighborhood Management Associates provides homeowner association management services, while Cabinetcraft makes and installs cabinets and countertops. Other units provide ground services such as grading and foundation work or sell home lighting and other accents.
Far from being immune to the economic crisis and downturn in the residential construction industry, John Wieland Homes saw its sales go down by about half in 2008. It postponed certain developments and cut its workforce in half. Founder John Wieland got personally involved in kick-starting home sales by taking an eight-week tour through the firm's active markets in 2009. He camped out in unsold homes during his Get Housing Moving tour, which promoted home ownership and extended deals to buyers. As the economy rebounds, the company is picking its development activities back up. – less
