The EHR Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing KGH-DHC’s Health Information Technology (HIT) training programs. KGH-DHC’s HIT programs include but are not limited to NextGen’ s Electronic Health Records, Gateway EDI, Instamed, NextMD and Microsoft Office applications. These mission-critical systems require on-going training at various levels to ensure the users are optimizing system functionality.
The EHR Specialist is responsible for all aspects of the implementation and maintenance, including documenting workflow processes, project communications, technical analysis and design testing, implementation and modification. A primary purpose of this position is to ensure users are appropriately trained as they work towards achieving “meaningful use” of HIT, PQRS, PGIP and other incentive programs.
This position will also provide daily support and be a resource to the KGH-DHC staff in resolving user IT issues related to system use and/or functionality. The EHR Specialist will work with KGH-DHC’s off-site Network Administrator to maintain and improve IT infrastructure.
Essential Functions and Specific Duties
a. Develop and oversee EHR and other software implementation
b. Develop and continuously update training materials for various training items (Orientation, Advanced, Refresher classes, Helpful Hints, Frequently Asked Questions)
c. Conduct classroom style training for users
d. Conduct one-on-one training sessions with users as needed
e. Conduct observations of users in their environment to identify areas for improvement and suggestions for workflow redesign
f. Knowledge of, and ability to, maintain standard configurations and clinic specific templates and customization
g. Frequent travel to multiple local health centers in the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo area to support onsite training and issue resolution
h. Primary resource to KGH-DHC’s helpdesk staff in ticket resolution
i. Works with various vendors for issue resolution
j. Other duties within the scope of this position as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
a. Ability to work with minimal supervision and maximum accountability
b. Project management experience
c. Working knowledge of software development, instructional design, and EHR implementation
d. Exceptional communications abilities both orally and in writing with all levels of clinical, administrative, and support staff
e. Conceptual and practical understanding of various training techniques for users with various learning styles
f. Ability to customize and configure NextGen to support clinic workflow and clinical best practices
g. Ability to evaluate and analyze NextGen features and functionality for problem resolution
h. Ability to document workflow design and identify areas for improvement
i. Knowledge of industry best practices related to patient flow and staffing roles
j. Must have thorough education or training in the basics of medical terminology
k. Working knowledge of crystal reporting, SQL and website CMS
l. Exceptional computer skills, particularly in all Microsoft Office software
m. Ability to maintain a flexible schedule that will include some evening and weekend hours
a. BA/BS in Computer Science or a related field
b. Three to five years of health care experience (clinical background is helpful, but not required)
c. Three to five years of training experience with an EHR system (NextGen experience preferred)
