Primary job is to monitor and troubleshoot any issues with the main website and other websites. We have plenty of project work that coincides with operations. I have learned Oracle, Drupal. OpenVZ, Debian and other assortment of Apps. The hardest part of the job is that there are only a few sysadmins and any oncall duties will need to be addressed. There is not much of a rotation when it comes to after hours support. The best aspect of the position is the ability to try new technologies and venture out into new apps and configurations.
