Kemper Independence Insurance doesn't really operate alone. The company specializes in personal property/casualty insurance, including automobile, homeowners, and personal umbrella liability products. It sells its products nationwide through a network of more than 2,500 independent agents. In addition to its major product lines, Kemper offers identity theft insurance, as well as coverage for collectibles and home-based business assets. Its Package Plus offering combines several types of coverage (car, jewelry, home, and others) into a single policy. Kemper's independence is reined in by its parent, Chicago-based insurance firm Unitrin.
Kemper is the largest business in Unitrin's property/casualty unit. It sells only preferred and standard risk insurance, with a customer base of mainly middle and upper-middle income families.
Kemper began life as part of the Lumbermen's Group in 1926. It was acquired in 2002 by Trinity Universal Insurance Company, the Dallas-based property/casualty insurance subsidiary of Unitrin. In 2004 Unitrin combined the personal property/casualty operations of Trinity Universal, which operated as Unitrin Multi Lines, with Kemper. – less
