Dedicate your life
Second Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Abilene, TX – May 15, 2013
At Kirkland's I found that my life revolved around work. Didn't have very much time for family functions. If the job needed me, I was there. Management was great. Store crowded, but you get used to it. I learned a lot about floor sets, price change, and what goes into setting up a sale. I loved it at the time, but needed to step back and be able to – more... focus on my family more. – less

Friendly workplace, well organized store
Stockroom Manager (Former Employee), Denton, TX – May 15, 2013
Pros: helpful management
Cons: low job security
I enjoyed working at Kirkland's and was very happy helping people find what they were looking for with the given general descriptions. I learned how to set up the store to best fill space and show product. The hardest part of the job was when the store started closing as the store stopped receiving shipments from corporate and we had to work with the – more... other stores to fill space. This made it tough to work with the customers but I was always eager to help people find something for their home. – less

Terrible pay and no room for advancement
Sales Associate (Former Employee), New Hartford, NY – May 5, 2013
Pros: except managers katie, and karen are great.
Cons: everything else.
Pay is awful. Raises are 5 cents a year, and no cost of living increase, so what you get hired at is what you make for the life of your career there. Management at a store level is great, but terrible the higher up the chain you go. The company doesn't care about it's workers. It's cut positions over the years that have made more and more work for people – more... that get paid the same amount for doing more work. The managers can't be full time. They offer no benefits unless you're a store manager. It's a great place to do maybe season work, or as an extra job, but that's it. – less

Work is hard but pay is low
Senior Assistant Manager (Current Employee), Edmond, OK – April 29, 2013
Pros: job security
Cons: everything else
This company provides a job secure environment, it's very hard and they ask for so much from their employee's but aren''t willing to pay well for the amount of work that goes into making Kirkland's the multimillion dollar company they are today. With no merit increase for the 2013 year, it makes things even harder as a manager to keep team members employed. – more... We are turning over every other day and are hiring almost every week now. there is no consistency at all. – less

A relaxing retail store to shop and work at
Cashier (Former Employee), Tyler, TX – April 15, 2013
Pros: fun store meetings with games and food.
Cons: horrible availability of hours during non-holiday periods.
A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK
Most days included restocking the sales floor, helping customers, and other tasks to keep sales going. Most Monday's I'd help unload the delivery truck for new merchandise and unbox the items for backstock or to be put on the floor.
I worked the cash register and answered phone calls as well.
I frequently spent time working with – more... a customer to find the home decor, gift, or other item that matched their goals for shopping there.

WHAT I LEARNED
Home decor is not my forte, but I gained some insight into various items that fall into that category. Thinking creatively based on what customers hoped to accomplish became fun as I sought out items that would compliment what the customer wanted/found already.

MANAGEMENT
The management there were very accommodating and patient with me, as I had one to two other jobs during the slow, non-holiday times of the year. My schedule got changed frequently and they worked with me as best they could. I rarely felt like I was not appreciated. Many times I was complimented on my ability to rearrange shelving settings to make room for new items or to consolidate space. Management would often make up fun games to make store meetings entertaining rather than just simply going over new policies or material supplied by the company.

MY CO-WORKERS
Most of my co-workers were very easy to get along with. We chatted frequently and worked well together.

HARDEST PART OF JOB
Never knowing where an item was in the back room, and struggling to find an item that I was unfamiliar with (or had been MOVED since the last day I had worked).

MOST ENJOYABLE PART OF THE JOB
Engaging with the customers and finding ways to make them feel cared about as I helped them find what they were looking for. – less

Neat place to work, but too exhaustive
3rd assistant manager (Former Employee), Western New York – April 4, 2013
Pros: creative fun environment, fast pace, never boring, always new products
Cons: miserable freight process, low pay for exhausting work
I really loved and believed in the product and the mission or Kirklanda, fun affordable decor for the average person who wants a hip home! I was a manager, young single and trying to support myself and I worked 38 hours a weeks for a dollar over minimum wage and no benefits because I was considered part time. My day to day work was the constant floor – more... changes which would have been fine if I was compensated for it, but I was not. I also didn't appreciate the company's much abused coupon policy and their unwillingness to make it more fraud proof, yet they often placed pressure on us to reduce the abuse. Can't have it both ways!!! I miss being creative and setting up the fixtures but Kirklands needs to pay managers well for their intensely difficult jobs and not play games (36 hours a week and not offering benefits is a joke and deep down they know it)
I loved my staff and everything else but for as hard as I worked i couldn't come close to making ends meet. I would have stayed forever if they paid me better. – less

Productive
Sale Associate (Current Employee), Watchung, NJ – February 25, 2013
Pros: 20% discount
Cons: constantly changing appearance of the store
I usually help customers with what to buy to decorate their house with & build sales to make sales goal for the day. Also I've learned, from corperate, how to work on visuals to make our best sellers sell faster. Sometimes I work at the cash rep, but Predominantly work on the floor to recover disorganized areas.

This is a great company to work for.
Assistant Manager (Current Employee), New Hartford, NY – January 22, 2013
Pros: we are always doing contest within our district to win kirkland bucks, pizza parties.
Cons: no full time management or health benefits
There is not one day on this job that you do the same thing. You have to be prepared for things to change at the drop of a hat. The product is great and affordable for everyone. The employees that work at Kirkland are wonderful so this make managing them that much easier. The hardest part of this job is the manual labor, you are always doing floor changes. – more... Which includes rearranging the whole store around every other week. I love everything about this job. I enjoy helping customers find the prefect picture for their home. When a customer leaves happy it makes you feel great that you know they are going to enjoy their home that much more. – less

Very productive workplace and welcoming atmosphere.
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Mesa, AZ – January 11, 2013
A typical day at work consists of helping customers find what they are looking for and check them out as a cashier. I learned that giving your honest opinion, whether it's what the customer wants to hear or not, is the best opinion according to the customers. Management here at Kirkland's was fantastic. We, as employees, were able to accomplish so much – more... out of each day because the managers knew how to assist us in such a way that was beneficials for us as well as the customers. There was never a hard day that I couldn't get through. Working at Kirkland's was definitely a great first job. – less

worst place i ever worked for
sales associate (Former Employee), Wilmington NC – December 24, 2012
Pros: 20% discount if you like cheap stuff from china
Cons: no breaks. a lot of stuff gets returned due to poor quality
Low pay, neglected to mention it was a temp job at interview, treat you like a theif, checking your bag and coat after they walk you to door at shift end. send you home early to make sales/labor ratio. no hope for benefits, Customers are nice, but I felt bad selling them cheap stuff. The mangment tells you to sell, sell, sell. but they reap the bebefits. – more... You will never get a raise. – less

not competitive, struggling retail company
Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Columbus, OH – December 4, 2012
Pros: atmosphere
Cons: short breaks, busy holiday season
If you're just looking for a part-time job, this may be a place to work for you. It's ideal for those needing only part-time work, interested in employee discount, semi-retired.

It is not ideal for those interested in making a retail career for themselves. Advancement beyond Assistant Manager can be difficult.

Benefits are about average for retail – more... work. – less

Pros: always something different
Cons: heavy lifting daily
We carry a large variety of product, there is always work to be done. I like staying busy. I enjoy listening to what people want there home to look like and helping them make it happen. It is nice watching my co-worker work with customers because we all have a different view. It's nice to bounce ideas around. The hardest part of the job is lifting the – more... consoles and large mirrors. The best part of the job is merchandising. – less
