Teacher, Galliano, LA - November 3, 2015
Lafourche Parish School Board is a great company to work for if one does not have to pay bills. It is true that teaching is not about the salary, but the parish's teaching salary would not even be considered competitive. A typical work day for someone in my field requires teaching several classes at one school, inhaling lunch, traveling to another school to teach another class, traveling back to the home school, cramming all the possible planning and copying into the unpredictable 25 minutes left of the scheduled school day, conducting after school rehearsals lasting anywhere from 60 minutes to 5 hours, and then finally returning home only to have to lock yourself away from the world so the work that was unable to be done at school due to no planning time can be done before the next day begins. In the field of music, the lack of management is its biggest downfall. Teachers are being overworked due to the supervisor's expectations, but there is no sort of pay for the countless hours of extra work that goes beyond the regular school day. The amount of hours for the lack of pay makes this the hardest part of the job because it takes away from any time that can be spent with family and loved ones. It is wonderful working with some of the other teachers and educating students, but that doesn't account for the lack of salary needed to survive in this tough economy.
