Latham & Watkins' founders Dana Latham and Paul Watkins flipped a coin in 1934 to determine which of their names would go first on the law firm's shingle. From that coin toss, the firm has grown into one of the largest in the US and boasts more than 2,000 lawyers in about 30 offices around the world, from Europe to Asia. Latham & Watkins organizes its practices into five main areas: corporate; environment, land, and resources; finance; litigation; and tax. The firm has counted companies such as Amgen, Time Warner Inc., and Morgan Stanley among its clients.
In an effort to expand globally in both leading and emerging financial, commercial, and regulatory capitals, Latham & Watkins relocated some of its US and UK partners to the Middle East. The law firm has established a solid presence in three offices in the Gulf region -- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha (capital city of Qatar) -- to support cross-border mergers and acquisitions and other corporate finance deals, particularly between London and the Middle East.
In 2012 Latham & Watkins advised Suburban Propane Partners during its $1.8 billion acquisition of Inergy Propane. The firm also recently advised Watson Pharmaceuticals during its $4.25 billion acquisition of Actavis Group. – less
