About Lee County Government

Lee County Government provides a full complement of programs and services to the citizens of the county (total population over 540,000) and its municipalities Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs.

These programs include countywide services such as Libraries, Public Safety (EMS), Public Transit, Regional Parks, Human
 – more... Services, Veterans Services, Economic Development and the Visitor & Convention Bureau. It also includes services provided only in unincorporated areas (because the cities also provide services). Some of these services are Parks & Recreation, Transportation, Tolls, Utilities, Solid Waste, Community Development (planning and development services such as zoning, permitting, building inspections and code enforcement) and Natural Resources Management. The governing board for Lee County Government is the Board of Lee County Commissioners. The five commissioners are elected by all voters, but also represent the districts in which they live.

Lee County Government has nearly 2,700 employees and as a taxing authority has a $2 billion budget. It also helps fund the budgets of other separately elected constitutional officers such as the Sheriff's Office, Tax Collector, Property Appraiser, Clerk of Courts and Supervisor of Elections, as well as the local court system. The Board of County Commissioners, sitting as the Port Commissioners, also is the governing board of the Lee County Port Authority, which operates Southwest Florida International Airport and Page Field general aviation airport.

In both of these capacities, the Board of County Commissioners is the chief policy making and legislative body for the county. To carry out operations, it hires the County Manager, the County Attorney, the Executive Director of the Port Authority, and the two Hearing Examiners who conduct public hearings on zoning and land use matters.
