The idea of Local Motors is fantastic: an organization that can buck the trends and rapidly develop new technology to out innovate the competition. However, there is a strong difference between vision and the ability to carry it out. Local Motors lacks the capable hands-on leadership to follow through on vision.
As an employee, it is by far the most stressful job I have ever had. The changing of corporate directions on an almost weekly basis is difficult to plan around. Furthermore, having management with little practical experience in their job functions has created a bottleneck on decision making. Workflow is poor and processes are given lip-service but little else.
However, the co-workers at the non-management level are some of the smartest and most enjoyable people I know. They are humble about their talents, which are prolific. If management would clear up the bottlenecks on command and control, this group could accomplish amazing things.
