Border-jumping Lone Star Overnight (LSO) flies its flag not just in Texas, but in Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mexico as well. The express delivery company ships packages by land and air, offering several time-guaranteed next-day delivery options, including Saturday delivery. It handles packages that weigh as much as 150 lbs. By working to keep costs to a minimum, LSO can charge less for services similar to those offered within its home territory by delivery giants such as FedEx and UPS. Pittsburgh-based investment firm PNC Equity Partners, a unit of PNC Financial Services, owns a controlling interest in the company, which it acquired in 2007. LSO began operations in 1991.
In March 2009 LSO expanded its coverage to include every ZIP code in Texas. The move is the latest in LSO's expansion plans launched in 2008. That year, the company enlarged its territory by 500 cities, including adding a new city and state for LSO: Texarkana, Arkansas. – less
