LyondellBasell North America is the continent's leading producer of polypropylene. It is the American division of global petrochemical giant LyondellBasell and also makes polyethylene and other advanced polyolefin materials. The company operates about 30 manufacturing plants, technical centers, and R&D facilities in the US and Mexico. It also operates a petroleum refinery in Houston and acts as the exclusive marketer of polypropylene resins manufactured at a plant owned by ConocoPhillips. LyondellBasell's North American unit emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010 under a new parent holding company, Netherlands-based LyondellBasell Industries NV.
LyondellBasell's North American division has become an increasingly large part of LyondellBasell's global operations in recent years. In 2007, the North American segment accounted for less than 20% of LyondellBasell's revenues; that figure grew to 54% in 2009. Measured that same year, its North American holdings accounted for almost 70% of the parent company's long-lived global assets.
