General Statement of Duties: Designs and constructs modifications as well as performs repairs on County equipment, roads, and bridges using welding and metal fabrication skills.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Fleet Operations Manager and may receive guidance from the Fleet Coordinator or Lead Mechanic.

Supervision Exercised: As assigned.

Example of Duties: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in the Fleet Department.

  • Fabricates, grinds, and welds various items using a variety of processes for the purpose of building and repairing mechanical equipment, bridges and steel structures.
  • Repairs metal surfaces for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient use of items.
  • Maintains shop, equipment, tools, vehicle, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required items and ensuring safety.
  • Works with and prioritizes completion of projects/work orders in conjunction with Fleet Coordinator and Lead Mechanic.
  • Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability of required items.
  • Assists Road & Bridge crews and sometimes other County departments as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Responds to emergency situations as needed and/or assigned.
  • Utilizes mechanical skill abilities to perform repair work on a variety of equipment.
  • Utilizes a variety of specialized shop equipment and welders such as lathe and milling machine.
  • Performs equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains and submits various report forms relating to hours, duties and use/maintenance of vehicles.
  • Lays out and fabricates specific projects.
  • May received training in a wide variety of areas relating to Road and Bridge and/or specialized mechanical work as deemed necessary by the Fleet Manager.
  • Maintains and submits various report forms relating to hours, duties and use/maintenance of vehicles.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Attends work on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications: Should have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish the required duties of the Welder position.

  • Proficient use of a variety of specialized shop equipment, such as a lathe and milling machine, cutters and welders.
  • Ability to layout, fabricate, and assemble projects as directed or per knowledge.
  • Design, layout and assemble complex steel structures.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of Road and Bridge specialized equipment.
  • Work from engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Use knowledge to advise on projects involving repair.
  • Considerable knowledge in the areas of minor/major maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements: Physical dexterity and mobility required to perform the job listed under “Example of Duties.” Ability to perform heavy manual tasks requiring the full range of body movements. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling 45 pounds and greater; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 15% walking, and 80% standing. Installation and repair work requires climbing into awkward areas and performing work in non-traditional positions: above head, stretching and reaching with equipment or tools in-hand. The job is performed under temperature variations and some hazardous conditions. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, and work in inclement weather. Must be able to work in gravel, mud, deep snow and cover substantial distances over all types of terrain.

Education/Certification: High School graduate or equivalent and further education in the area of mechanics and/or a related field. Certified Welder.

Experience: Four years in field such as mechanics, welding or related field. Experience in Road and Bridge department preferred.
OR
Any combination of education and experience or exceptional performance.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Class B CDL. Subject to criminal background check and pre-employment drug test. Post employment drug test performed in accordance with standard CDL requirements.
