American Builders & Contractors Supply Co. (better known as ABC Supply) has put roofs over millions of heads. The largest wholesale distributor of roofing specializes in providing roofing, siding, windows, gutters, doors, and other exterior building products. ABC Supply operates about 450 outlets in some 45 states and the District of Columbia. The company carries its own brand of products under the Amcraft name and offers products from outside vendors. ABC Supply markets its products to builders and professional contractors. The family-owned business was founded in 1982 by the late Ken Hendricks, the son of a roofer, and his wife Diane. ABC Supply is one of about 30 diverse companies owned by Hendricks Holding.
Mergers and Acquisitions
ABC Supply expanded its business through its purchase of New Jersey rival Bradco Supply. The move represents the Wisconsin company's largest purchase yet and lays the foundation for its next phase of growth. The 2010 acquisition added about 130 locations in 30 states that operate under several banners names, such as Admiral Building Products, Bak-A-Lum, FlexMaster, and H. Verby. Adding Bradco also has put ABC Supply on track to reach its goal of $5 billion in sales and 500 branches. The deal builds on the company's 2009 purchase of building products wholesaler Chesapeake Siding and Roofing, which has a presence in Virginia and North Carolina.
Sales and Marketing
The company markets its products directly to professionals and building contractors. It works to attract clients by producing a catalog that contains more than 6,000 tools and specialty items and by making its fasteners, sealants, and hand and power tools available for purchase at www.abccatalog.com. ABC Supply generates 96% of its sales from the professional market, which includes builders, remodeling contractors, and contractors that focus on roofing, siding, windows, and other exterior building products.
ABC Supply has implemented several initiatives in an effort to help contractors build their businesses. Its ABC Freedom Program, which consists of certain products and services, offers contractors the tools to build their businesses. To assist contractors in marketing themselves, ABC Supply offers jobsite marketing, a contractor website program, professional image-building program, and target mail program. The top US roofing supplier even allows contractors to order a dumpster for their work sites -- through its open top dumpster program -- when they order products for projects.
Following Ken Hendricks' accidental death in 2007, Diane became chairman of the company and president David Luck added the CEO's title. Amid falling sales and the closing of 30 outlets during the depths of the recession and housing industry crash, Luck and Diane Hendricks plotted to make a bid for Bradco, which had recently been sold to a private equity firm. – less
