MaineHealth provides health care to residents of central, southern, and western Maine. The health system's facilities include Maine Medical Center, St. Andrews Hospital & Healthcare Center, Spring Harbor Hospital, Miles Memorial Hospital (part of Miles Health Care), and Stephens Memorial Hospital (part of Western Maine Health). MaineHealth also operates long-term care facilities, a home health care service, physician practices, medical laboratories, and other health care service units. The company's Synernet subsidiary provides administrative and group purchasing services for MaineHealth's members and other health care organizations.
In 2009 the nonprofit hospital Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) became a full member of MaineHealth. The hospital had been affiliated with MaineHealth for several years. As a full member of MaineHealth, SMMC gained access to planning, consulting, capital, and group purchasing benefits, while remaining an independently governed entity. MaineHealth aimed to enhance its care services and lower health care costs through the agreement.
MaineHealth also moved to expand its network further by agreeing to acquire a 50-bed community hospital, Goodall Hospital, in Sanford, Maine in 2009; however the merger was canceled after the FTC raised concerns over possible antitrust violations.
Other MaineHealth affiliates include MidCoast Health Services, PenBay Healthcare, and St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. The New England Rehabilitation Hospital is a joint venture with HealthSouth. – less
