Mars Petcare US has no quibble with kibble. A leading manufacturer of dry pet foods in the US, with some 15 production plants nationwide, the company makes dry pet foods, soft-dry food, soft treats, and dog biscuits under the Cesar, Pedigree, Royal Canin, and Whiskas brands, among others. Mars Petcare also makes products for other pet food companies, manufactures store brands for its retail customers, and sells its own regional brands. Its customers include mass merchandisers (such as Wal-Mart, Meijer), pet supply chains (PETCO, PetSmart), supermarkets, and farm and feed stores. The company was founded in 1954 as Doane Products and is part of candy and pet food behemoth Mars' pet care division.
One of the world's leading pet food manufacturers, Mars Petcare competes muzzle to muzzle with Nestlé Purina PetCare and Colgate-Palmolive's Hill's Pet Nutrition, among others. Indeed, the company's Pedigree, Royal Canin, and Whiskas brands each ring up more than $1 billion in sales annually.
Mars Petcare benefitted amid the economic downturn as consumers sought additional value from their pet food purchases. To lick pricier holistic brands, the company has introduced more healthful and palatable options designed to entice animal owners focused on both nutrition and price. These include wet foods packed with added glucosamine (for strong joints) and Omega 3s (for skin and coats), as well as better-tasting dry foods with more vegetables and whole grains.
Before it rolled out more wholesome additions to its product line, Mars Petcare in late 2008 appointed Luc Mongeau as its president. He replaced former Doane Pet Care executive Doug Cahill, who oversaw the integration of the two companies. Mongeau joined the pet food maker from Mars Canada. – less
