In 1843, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd founded Maryhurst, the oldest operating child welfare agency in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Sisters provided a caring environment for girls who suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as homelessness. While it is still inspired by the Good Shepherd values of individual nurturance, appropriate – more... structure, and professional treatment, Maryhurst has operated under an independent board of directors and management team since 1998. Today the organization exists as a private, non-profit agency dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and families in greatest need.
Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Maryhurst has provided high-quality therapeutic services to the children in our care for more than 160 years. We have built a solid continuum of services which now include residential treatment (teenage girls), therapeutic group homes (teenage girls and boys), therapeutic foster care and adoption (girls and boys, ages birth - 21), and treatment-based after-school programming (girls and boys, ages 10 - 15). We continue to adapt our services in order to meet the changing needs of the children we serve.
Maryhurst serves severely traumatized children who most often are victims of sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse. Many of the children who come to us have a history of risk-taking behaviors such as running away, substance abuse, aggression, and suicidal gesturing. They face significant barriers to educational and social development and frequently have serious impairments in judgment, motivation, and self-discipline. Maryhurst provides them with a safe, highly-structured, supportive setting in which they can begin their long healing process.
Maryhurst has gained national recognition as a leader in the field of residential child care. Our work with greatest-need, abused and neglected children was highlighted in 2006 in an ABC Primetime special hosted by Diane Sawyer, entitled "Calling All Angels. In 2008, we received a national Angels in Adoption award from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute for our commitment to providing permanent homes to children.
Maryhurst is licensed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a both a child-caring and child-placing agency. We are accredited nationally through the Council on Accreditation. – less – More from ZoomInfo »
