Matheson Tri-Gas is a provider of industrial gases primarily to semiconductor manufacturers and other electronics makers. Additionally, the company supplies bulk gases to the food and medical industries. Matheson Tri-Gas' operations include the provision of gas-handling equipment like generators, filters, purifiers, regulators, and valves. The company serves customers throughout the US and in Asia, Canada, and Europe. Matheson Tri-Gas is a subsidiary of Japan's largest industrial gas company, Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation, and was formed by the 1999 merger of Matheson Gas Products and Tri-Gas, Inc. In 2010, the company rebranded its products and services as MATHESON, though it did not change its legal name.
Matheson Tri-Gas has a couple of joint ventures with global gas giant Linde. One is called Linde Nippon Sanso and based in Germany; it supplies bulk and specialty gases to customers throughout Europe in the electronics industry. The other, Matheson Tri-Gas Global Helium, is made up of the former helium businesses of Linde and BOC, a UK-based industrial gas producer acquired by Linde in 2006.
As part of a US growth strategy, Matheson Tri-Gas acquired Valley National Gases in 2009, whose business is strongest in the East and Midwest. Valley National had been the largest privately held industrial gas producer in the US before investment firm CI Capital sold it to Matheson Tri-Gas. Also that year, the company acquired ETOX Inc. and Gastech LLC, both based in northeast Texas. The additions expanded Matheson Tri-Gas' reach into East and Central Texas, Southeast Arkansas, and Northwest Louisiana.
The company significantly added to its US business when it bought Western International Gas and Cylinders in 2010. Western is a Texas-based manufacturer and wholesale supplier of acetylene, propylene, high pressure gases, cylinders, valves, and related services. The acquisition is designed to help Matheson Tri-Gas pursue its US growth strategy.
Further growing its product and services portfolios, in 2011 the company acquired Quimby Welding Supplies, which had 200 retail location across the US. The deal also complements Matherson Tri-Gas's positIon as a leader in medical and specialty gases in the Pacific Northwest.
The company also grows organically. In 2011 it (with partner Air Products and Chemicals) neared completion of a major joint venture helium production plant near Big Piney, Wyoming, that will process crude helium from a Denbury Resources natural gas processing facility. – less
