Michigan Sporting Goods Distributors has outgrown its name. Doing business as MC Sports, the sporting goods retailer operates more than 60 MC Sports stores in nearly 10 Midwestern states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin), as well as an e-commerce site. MC Sports offers an assortment of gear for team sports (including baseball, football, and soccer), action sports (cycling, skiing), racquet sports (tennis, squash), and golf, as well as indoor fitness equipment and outdoor recreational items. The company also carries licensed apparel from the MLB, MLS, NFL, NCAA, and WNBA, among other sports leagues. MC Sports was founded in 1946 as Michigan Clothiers.
The company also offers specialized ski and outdoor expertise through its Ski Centers and Outdoor Centers at selected locations. Ski Centers perform ski and snowboard services such as fitting, waxing, and repair while Outdoor Centers outfit individuals and families with backpacks, hydration packs, and tents.
MC Sports has grown steadily during its six decades in business, however, the US recession and lingering tough economic times have pressured expansion in recent years. (Retailers, including sporting goods sellers, have generally been dealing with declining demand as consumers curtail their spending.) In 2009 the chain added a store in Manitowac, Wisconsin, and closed a location in Springfield, Illinois. – less
