Job Title: Senior Account Executive (SAE)
Reports To: Account Supervisor (AS) or Account Director (AD)
Department: Medical Communications
Supervises: Account Executive (AE)

Position Summary:
The Senior Account Executive serves as the client’s primary contact within the agency to represent the client’s requests and point of view. He/She is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing client initiatives within the medical and scientific communications space; maintaining client satisfaction; identifying and organizing growth opportunities with the client by building client relationships, helping the PM establish and monitor budgets, ensuring adherence to timelines, and identifying and enlisting resources; and ensuring the quality and timeliness of the final deliverable product.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree (minimum), preferably in health sciences, marketing, or communications field
  • 5 years of pharmaceutical agency experience; medcom projects and/or publications experience required; training experience a plus
  • 1 to 2 years of supervisory experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of pharmaceutical industry
  • Extensive knowledge of communications planning
  • Good knowledge of various types of medical communication project types, including disease state education, slide programs, mobile apps, medical publications (such as abstracts, posters, and manuscripts), and more
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to manage numerous projects, requests, and responsibilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (knowledge of publication tracking tools a plus)
  • Ability to monitor competitor and industry developments
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through
  • Ability to function as team leader
  • Knowledge of publication guidelines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Basic understanding of science and drug therapy
  • Ability to drive and motivate a team

Position Responsibilities:
Demonstrates behavior expected of a professional member of the organization, including but not limited to:

  • Client management

– Supports Account Supervisor (AS) and Account Director (AD) in cultivating and building solid relationships with clients
– Schedules and prepares materials for client meetings
– Documents client contacts (via e-mail), requests (change orders), and meetings (conference reports) concisely and accurately
– Prepares and sends materials to clients and authors/speakers
– Researches and recommends (with AS/AD approval) journals and conferences
– Performs research as directed by AS/AD
– Keeps entire agency apprised of client activities and needs
– Identifies and organizes growth opportunities within current client base
– Manages financial aspects of products as assigned
– Ensures that all project timetables are met
– Interfaces with client at product management level and with appropriate support departments
– Contributes to development and implementation of product communication (publication, advocacy development, and medical education) plans
– Continuously monitors the marketplace and provides updates to client and agency on product issues
– Keeps supervisors aware of all issues within client’s organization and within agency
– Develops appropriate client relationships; ensures and is responsible for client satisfaction

  • Project management

– Initiates and executes all projects
– Provides effective direction to agency team
– Functions as internal team leader, ensuring that all members of the team work together smoothly and effectively
– Opens and closes jobs
– Builds, maintains, and drives timelines—projects must be on time
– Works closely with operations department to develop cost estimates prior to project initiation and routinely review estimate as project progresses
– Alerts AS/AD when job may exceed estimate—projects must be on budget
– Manages monthly billing with finance department
– Maintains and sends client status reports
– Maintains electronic and hard-copy job folders based on established procedures
– Manages multiple priorities
– Responsible for fiscal management of assigned accounts, including budget development and management
– Monitors overall account status and development
– Ensures quality control of all projects prior to presentation to client
– Prioritizes account workload and delegates responsibilities as needed
– Collaborates with Account Director to develop annual budgets

  • Creative and scientific output

– Develops client/product meeting minutes and contact reports
– Provides team with complete project briefing document, which has been approved by AS/AD
– Reviews with AS/AD creative and scientific output to ensure it is on strategy, on message, and clearly exceeds client’s expectations
– Ensures output meets client’s graphic and copy standards

  • Agency Management

– Assists AS/AD in proposal development
– Prepares materials for presentations
– Coordinates pre and post mailings
– Presents medical communications plans to existing clients
– Identifies and organizes growth opportunities with potential departments within clients’ organization

Participates in professional growth and development

  • Attends company-sponsored in-services and/or continuing education
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations as necessary

Participates in other activities:

  • Performs other job duties as assigned
  • Cross trains in other positions as requested

Special Requirements

  • Willing to travel (~10%-20%)
  • Willing to work extra hours to meet impending deadlines
