Solution Architect:
The Solution Architect is the primary accountable resource on a project or program for identifying viable solutions options based on customer need, corporate/enterprise/department strategies, industry best practices and trends and defined corporate standards, policies and procedures (data security etc.). The Solution Architect will need to be tightly coupled with both Enterprise Architects and Domain Architects to ensure any solutions they define are supported and properly vetted. The Solution Architect is also responsible for reviewing proposed solution architectures with all stakeholders and obtaining support leveraging influencing and communication abilities.
Solution Architects are heavily engaged at the beginning of a program or project and typically move into an advisory role once the project/program enters into the execution phases of the implementation lifecycle. Solution Architects will be responsible for solution design activities across multiple projects and/or programs simultaneously and will need to manage a dynamic workload.
Key Responsibilities:
Helps guide the business and IT on architectural alternatives by clearly articulating the implications of each, short and long term, solution
Identifies and communicates risks (business, application, technical) associated with component or application implementation at the business level, and enterprise level (working with Enterprise Architect)
Participates in business and architecture planning sessions and anticipates future business and architecture changes and strategies
Develops an understanding of market positioning, visioning and solution value add
Responsible for devising solutions, solution architecture descriptions, and subsequent monitoring and governance of their implementation
Designs and implements business solutions that link disparate processes and application systems
Evaluates the business process architecture and ensures it is flexible enough to support incremental development, ongoing maintenance, and future enhancements to the system architecture
Ability to understand not just application architecture and design but understand its alignment with longer term/Enterprise roadmaps and/or its limitations or implications of not aligning
Works with Strategic Planner to provide architecture input into strategic roadmap
Provides essential input as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to any major business process or business product-altering project
Partner with business (under direction of PMs) to deliver detailed functional / non-functional technical requirements
Lead (with Project Manager) RFP process, including providing questions for the RFP that cover all aspects of technology related to the solution and its implementation
Translates business objectives and processes into a conceptual architecture that describes key functional and non-functional requirements
Develops and documents actionable deliverables tied to Conceptual and Detailed Architecture Design Specifications
Accountable for quality of the solution through the SDLC process
Responsible for “care and feeding” of existing application portfolio. Feed into the planning process proposals for migration and obsolescence projects related to portfolio, or specific tools
Develop and ensure adherence to the Service Level Agreements with business areas for application portfolio
Assist in managing vendor relationships, specifically responsible for interacting with vendor technical architects, and assisting in problem resolution
Key Qualifications:
College degree in related technical / engineering area, or equivalent work experience
Typically requires10+ years of experience in enterprise systems and software development environments and at least 3 years of business process re-engineering experience
Strong estimation skills
High energy, focused on the goal, definitive
Ability to multitask, and a good judge of where to focus time and effort
Works well independently, but also effective working within a group
Good presentation skills. Must be able to present technical information to a broad non-technical audience
Experienced in J2EE architecture, design and development of J2EE based applications
Ability to design solutions that are appropriate to the problem at hand – in terms of simplicity, cost, and support required
Ability to explain complex technical concepts in pictures and words that are understandable to a broad audience
Experience in migrating business processes and technologies to SOA
Experienced with design and implementation of technical solutions with a wide variety of hardware and operating systems
Broad knowledge of IT industry trends and best practices
Understanding of both architecture methodologies as well as Business Process Re-engineering (BPR), current and future technology and application trends, and development life cycles
Experience integrating legacy systems with SaaS.
Knowledge of the overall architecture and business operating models, logical flows and functional requirements and underlying technical architecture
Knowledge of/or experience with BPM tools tied to BPEL, TOGAF, Zachman, FEAF, COBIT, ITIL or Gartner Framework a plus
Strong influencing / negotiation skills
Excellent collaboration skills (with other architects, analysts, managers, business)
