When you're on a fishing trip in northern Indiana and step on a rusty fishing hook or generally feel a little green around the gills, you can rely on Memorial Health System to help you get back in the swim. The health network (also known as Memorial Hospital & Health System) provides wellness services in northern Indiana and southern Michigan. It operates through a number of medical care entities including Memorial Hospital of South Bend (with some 620 beds) and a network of family care and specialty clinics. Other Memorial Health System units include Memorial Medical Group (physician practice organization), Memorial MedFlight (emergency air transportation), and Memorial Home Care (visiting nurse association).
While the Memorial Health System was only established in 1984, the Memorial Hospital of South Bend has been around since 1894. The hospital provides specialty cardiac, cancer, and rehabilitation services; it also includes the Memorial Children's Hospital.
The health system operates joint ventures with area physician groups, such as its partnership with North Central Neurosurgery to provide spine and neuroscience services. Another venture with Michiana Medical Associates, the Community Health Alliance, provides managed care services to insurance companies and their customers.
Memorial Health regularly conducts expansion efforts at its facilities. For instance, it opened new main entrance, lobby, and inpatient and outpatient surgery facilities at the Memorial Hospital in 2009; the projects cost a total of $70 million. The system had also planned to build a new 100-bed hospital and related outpatient facilities in Valparaiso, Indiana. However, the hospital's construction was postponed in 2009 due to economic conditions.
In 2011 Memorial Hospital acquired the Madison Center, a 90-bed inpatient mental health facility located in South Bend that had been experiencing financial difficulties. Upon completion of the purchase, the psychiatric hospital was renamed Memorial Epworth Center and became a department of Memorial Hospital of South Bend. The purchase increased that facility's capacity from 530 to 620 beds. – less
