This company has a great service/ product concept and successful working model in Houston, Tx., but the upper management is out of touch with reality. I was hired as an office manager to open up and manage a new branch office in Lafayette, La. for this skilled labor staffing and placement agency. I received minimal orientation training from the corporate office and zero mentoring/ training in staffing. The owner of the company insisted on managing this office from South Carolina while there was a very successful District Manager who could have trained and managed me just 4 hours away in Houston. When the owner did come to visit all he wanted to do was go on sales calls to get new accounts. I was expected to break into, establish a brand, and compete with an already embedded staffing industry with no assistance, no staff, and no advertising budget outside of an INDEED and a CAREERBUILDER account. I sold a few accounts and struggled with getting the candidates past the weld testing process. We went as far as to get two welding machines sent over from Houston and hire a CWI to do pre- weld test accessments but the company would not even buy all of the gear and equipment needed to carry it out. The owner did not possess a contractors license in the state of Louisiana which limited me from closing key accounts. We called it a day after 6 months and the next guy only lasted two. The VP of Operations was let go at that time as well. 3 months later the Division Manager quit and moved on. Bad boss.
I learned that one person can not successfully sale accounts (regionally), recruit, interview, and qualify labor for those accounts, and then manage the accounts, and manage office logistics all at the same time. Silly me, I tried. It's an Army thing.
I learned a lot about the skilled labor market in the gas & oil industry. I now understand the culture here and all the good ole' boy hook ups and illegal labor pipeline from Mexico, the Philippines, and southeast Asia. I know how the industry treats the average worker and going labor rates.
